The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) articulates a vision of education that goes beyond rote learning, aiming at holistic student development, global awareness and sustainable thinking. This paper analyses how NEP 2020 embeds concepts of sustainability and global citizenship into its curricular and pedagogical framework across school and higher education. It explores key policy provisions, reviews how these link with global frameworks (such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)), examines preliminary implementation challenges, and suggests ways to enhance the translation of policy into meaningful student learning outcomes. The findings indicate that NEP 2020 provides a strong conceptual basis for sustainability and global citizenship education, but its realisation depends heavily on teacher preparation, curriculum redesign, resource allocation and building student agency for global sustainability action.
