Abstract

The Indian freedom struggle represents one of the most significant anti-colonial movements in modern history. It was not a single event but a long and complex process involving political awakening, social reform, economic resistance, revolutionary activities, mass mobilisation and negotiations with British colonial authorities. The movement transformed India from a collection of diverse regions under imperial control into a nation united by the aspiration for self-rule. This paper examines the evolution of the Indian freedom movement from early resistance against colonial expansion to the achievement of independence in 1947. It analyses the causes of colonial opposition, the role of major leaders, the contribution of different social groups, the significance of mass movements, and the challenges faced during the transition to independence.
